Title: A fixed grid-and-ruled split can divide notes awkwardly

I like the idea of grid space for calculations and ruled space for explanations, but a fixed split can leave one side mostly empty. It can also put a calculation and its explanation on opposite sides of the gutter. I'd rather use grid throughout and mark off a ruled section when I need one.
