I don't need a pen to have a long list of features to enjoy it. The way the barrel feels in my hand and how the ink goes down can be enough to make a simple everyday pen worth choosing, especially when I'm trying to keep stationery spending reasonable.

A full page is a better test than the first few lines. New-pen novelty can carry you for a bit; if it still feels good halfway down, that's the useful part.

A decent clip and a cap that's quick to remove count, too. If you're carrying it all day, those details make it easier to grab for a quick note.

A pen can be uncomplicated and still earn its spot. I notice whether it writes right away after sitting; having to scribble first gets old when I just want to jot a quick note.
