An album on repeat beats a playlist for background listening

For background music, I'd rather replay an album I already know than put a playlist on shuffle. The sequence gives the listening a bit of shape, and I don't get pulled out of what I'm doing by a sudden change of mood or the urge to skip around. I still like playlists when I'm choosing music to listen to properly, but for everyday background sound, familiar albums work better for me.

Knowing the sequence helps, but consistency matters too. A couple of much louder or busier tracks can still pull your attention away, even on a familiar album.

True, lyrics can be just as distracting for me. Even at a steady volume, unfamiliar vocals pull my attention more than familiar ones, so an album I know tends to stay in the background.
