A separate commonplace book or notes kept with each book?

I've been saving lines from nonfiction, but I'm not sure where to keep them. In a separate commonplace book, ideas from different reads would be together, but I might lose the context around a quote. Notes with each book stay close to the source, though they can be harder to find later. How do you keep quotes easy to revisit without making note-taking a whole extra project?

I keep the note with the book, with the page number and a few words on why it caught my eye. Only the lines I expect to revisit go in a running index with the book title and page, so I'm not copying everything twice.

Keep the quote and page reference with the book, then reserve a separate commonplace book for connections across reads. A short note in your own words, with source references, gives you something to revisit without copying every quote twice.
