Protecting a Field Notes notebook without adding bulk

I'm trying to settle on how much protection a pocket notebook needs for everyday carry. A tougher sleeve might keep the cover from getting chewed up, but it also makes the notebook less convenient to grab and use. I'm leaning toward reinforcing just the spots that take the most wear rather than covering the whole thing. What has held up for you without adding much bulk?
